Hospitality & Tourism – fascinating and growing industry
According to the statistics released by Government of India for the year 2017, total 8.80 million foreign tourists arrived in India registering an annual growth of 9.7% against global tourism growth of 3.9%. Domestic tourist visits was 1613.6 million with annual growth of 12.7%.
Foreign exchange earnings from tourism was US$ 22.92 billion (INR 1, 54,146 crore) at an annual growth of 8.81% against global growth of 2.0%
The tourism industry generates 13.50 million jobs across sub-segments such as Restaurants (10.49 million jobs), Hotels (2.3 million jobs) and Travel Agents/Tour Operators (0.66 million).
But considering the fact that India’s share in international tourist arrivals is only 1.18% and it ranked 25th in the world; a lot much is needed to promote it. India has all the elements of attracting a tourist; be it snow clad mountains, adventure sports, trekking sites, beaches, wildlife, heritage & historic sites or its rich cultural heritage, handicraft, cuisine ….
Indian tourism share can achieve around 3.0% globally but considering the fact that it has only 208 approved hotels under four star category, 128 under five star , 138 under five star deluxe and 36 heritage properties, a lot more needs to be done to improve tourism infrastructure. It’s not only construction of hotels and restaurant but to get trained manpower to run them professionally is going to be a challenge for industry.
